The Kennesaw State University Chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society
Tim Neja, Senior Director of Laboratory Operations, visited with SAACS of KSU today and gave a wonderful presentation about the research being done at Cryolife. Cryolife is a Kennesaw-based company that develops bio-surgical devices and processes tissues destined for transplantation. He demonstrated one of their most popular products, BioGlue, which is a strictly internal surgical adhesive. This hydrogel material is currently being used during such procedures as valve repair. If anyone present at the meeting did not receive his contact information, send SAACS an email to request it. Their website is http://www.cryolife.com and can only be viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Thanks to all those who attended this meeting.
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the cleanup effort at Wildcat Creek, a part of the Dunwoody Nature Center. We collected glass bottles, tennis balls, a bicycle tire, and a pipe, just to name a few things! It was such a perfect day to be outside. Here are some pictures from the event. The SAACS officers hope to organize an Adopt-a-Stream program next semester.
The election results are in! Gina Polimeni is our new president and Amanda Hess our new vice president for the 2005-2006 academic year. Gina Polimeni is a sophomore chemistry major. She works as a teaching assistant for the general chemistry labs and occasionally tutors these courses. Amanda Hess is a junior chemistry major. Her interests include analytical chemistry and engineering. Congratulations to both!
Join SAACS for a river cleanup at Wildcat Creek! This cleanup is being hosted by the Dunwoody Nature Center. We will meet at 10am and the cleanup will last approximately two hours. If you decide to join us, please RSVP by email to the general KSU SAACS email address or to Gina Polimeni directly at gpolimeni at gmail dot com. If you’re interested in carpooling, let Gina know and she will arrange to pick up interested participants at Kennesaw.
We will meet at Dunwoody Nature Center. Their address is as follows:
5343 Roberts Drive
Dunwoody, GA 30338
Bring gloves and outdoor clothing for this event! We’ll show up, rain or shine, so dress appropriately.

The Joy of Toys
Our chapter will be having a toy drive all week, and a wrap-up event on Friday to celebrate NCW, Mole Day (Oct. 23rd) and Halloween! More info coming soon!
Oct. 11, at 12:30pm in Room 212
This lunch and meeting will be all about getting ready for National Chemistry Week (Oct. 16-22). This year’s theme is the “Joy of Toys,” and we’ll be sponsoring a week-long toy drive. After eating and making our own bouncy balls and silly putty, we’ll set up the drop boxes and posters for the drive.
Sept. 27, at 12:30 pm in Room 212
Want to know more about undergraduate research? This is your chance. Whether you are just curious, or have undergraduate experience, we want you there. This luncheon will begin with a panel discussion, followed by an opportunity to talk one-on-one with the researchers. The panel will consist of upperclassmen from the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department who have done or are currently doing undergraduate research here at KSU. All are welcome!
There will be a leadership meeting this Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 3:30PM in Room 212 of the Science building. This is a reiteration of last week’s meeting for all officers and committee heads. Also, if you know anyone that can come and speak at one of the meetings (biochemist, for example), please bring that contact information with you. Hope to see you there!
The general meeting scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, 12:30pm has been cancelled. However, we look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005 same time, same place!
